How to Keep Your Business Running During Your Vacation

keep your business running

The holiday season is upon us, and with that comes vacation time for many entrepreneurs. If you’re on the fence about shutting down your business while you go over the river and through the woods because you’re worried you’ll miss out on sales or opportunities, keep reading.

You absolutely can take a vacation while keeping your business alive. Here’s how:

Tip 1: Start Planning Early

If you know you’ll be out between Christmas and New Year’s, plan for your vacation now. Let your clients know you’ll be out, and if they need any work done, to inform you now so you can get it done early. Clear your plate of work so that you can walk out the door confident that you didn’t leave any activities undone.

This will also help you transition back to work on your return, and keep you from having to face a giant pile of work after such a relaxing vacation.

Tip 2: Put Someone in Charge

If your company will continue to operate in your absence, find a replacement for you for the week. At the minimum, you need a point of contact you can include in your vacation email autoresponder so that if people who email you need immediate help, they can get it. I always give a few points of contact in my autoresponder so that the appropriate person can help my clients.

Make sure the person you put in charge is confident in “being you” while you’re out. Go over any protocols or questions they have, and discourage them from contacting you unless it’s a true emergency. Empower them to make decisions in your absence.

Tip 3: Schedule Your Marketing

What I love about marketing tools these days is how you can schedule your social media updates and blog posts in advance. No one even needs to know you’re not working.

Carve out time from your busy schedule to get your social media updates scheduled in your absence, as well as to write a few posts to go live while you’re out.

Tip 4: Tie Up Loose Ends

Do you have bills due while you’re out? Meetings you’re supposed to attend? Make sure everything is squared away so you don’t disappoint anyone who expects to meet with you (and don’t miss due dates for bills).

The more details you pay attention to now, the more refreshed you can return to the office after the holidays.

Tip 5: Relax. Your Business will be Fine

More than all the tactical, this is the hardest for many business owners. They are convinced that their businesses will fall apart if they’re not there. But the truth is, your business can handle it. Whether you’re a solopreneur or you have a capable team, if you’ve let clients know you’ll be out and done your part to clear your plate, you can relax and enjoy your time off.

And given that many other people take vacations at the end of the year, rest assured that there will be no crises while you’re out.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On November 24, St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch announced the grand jury’s decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown. In Dispatch 11, Vice News roamed the streets of Ferguson the day after widespread arson and looting occurred in response to the announcement, as the evening begins with a stand-off between protesters and police outside the Ferguson Police Department — now heavily guarded by National Guard troops. Resort Town Steamboat Springs Takes Customer Service Training

steamboat springs

When market researchers at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association asked the town’s visitors if they would recommend the town to others, 70 percent said yes. That might not seem like a bad rating. But people within the Colorado resort town weren’t pleased.

In fact, the rating had dropped by seven points since the last survey three years prior, in 2010. A deeper look into the results showed a growing number of negative comments about the service at local stores and restaurants.

Though the town still had a lot to offer, slipping customer service can have a big impact in a crowded market. Tom Kern, chief executive of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association told the New York Times:

“Anybody who comes to the West can go mountain biking or road biking or hiking in Telluride or Aspen or wherever.”

So differentiating the town from those other locations was paramount. That’s why Kern and a number of small business owners throughout the community decided to take action. They did so by hiring a customer service consultant, who put together a training program for the small businesses in town.

The program taught business owners and their employees to connect with customers on a personal level. They started by asking simple questions like “Where are you from?” and “What are your hobbies?” Then they continued by teaching people how to have genuine conversations with guests and how to turn those interactions into customer loyalty.

Some business owners in town were skeptical at first. But in order to increase that loyalty factor, cooperation from all local business leaders was needed. And, after the initial round of training, most local owners and managers became true believers, realizing the value of these authentic interactions in order to improve customer loyalty and eventually boost revenue and sales. They soon passed along the lessons to their employees and others throughout resort community.

Great customer service quickly became contagious. After a similar training program at the local ski resort, even the historically gruff lift operators at the local ski resorts were engaging visitors in conversations. The effects of the training won’t be measurable right away. But business owners and officials are optimistic that the changes in customer service will increase that loyalty factor and encourage more visitors to recommend their town to others.

An Uncertain Fate: Mexico’s Disappeared Students (Part 3)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On September 26, teaching students from the Ayotzinapa Normal School in Mexico were intercepted by police forces en route to a protest in Iguala. In the ensuing clash, six people were killed, and 43 Ayotzinapa students were taken away by the police. Investigations over the following weeks led to the startling allegations that the police had acted at the behest of the local mayor, and had turned over the abducted students to members of the Guerreros Unidos cartel. All 43 students are now feared dead. The case has come to represent the negative feeling of the Mexican public toward the state of justice and the rule of law in Mexico. The events have now galvanized the survivors of the attack and the disappeared students’ parents. Nationwide demonstrations have increased in intensity, and recently led to government buildings in the state of Guerrero to be set on fire. In the final episode, VICE News travels to Cocula, where another mass grave has been found, raising a new theory as to the fate of the 43 missing students, as protests in Mexico City against the president and government have reached boiling point. Combatting America’s Opioid Crisis: Heroin’s Antidote

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Abuse of prescription painkillers, heroin, and other opioids has spiked over the past decade in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 100 Americans die every day from drug overdoses. Overdoses now kill more people in the US each year than gunshot wounds or car accidents. The stigma that surrounds drug users has made finding a solution difficult. New England has been hit especially hard by fatal overdoses. In Massachusetts, deaths caused by heroin and other opioids have increased by more than 90 per cent since 2002. In response, the state started a pilot program in 2007 aimed at decreasing the number of fatal overdoses. The centerpiece of the program is a drug called Naloxone, known by its brand name Narcan. It’s a nasal spray that can instantly stop an opioid overdose. VICE News went to Massachusetts to see how effective Narcan has been in stopping fatal overdoses, and uncovered the reasons why other states may have been slow to adopt similar life-saving programs. How The US Created the Islamic State: Talking Heads

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News VICE News and The New York Review of Books have teamed up to create Talking Heads, a series about the big issues of the day as seen by The Review’s most renowned contributors. In this episode of Talking Heads, Mark Danner discusses his New York Review of Books essay, “Iraq: The New War.” Danner wrote this essay in mid-2003, outlining how American policy during the Iraq War in many ways effectively helped incite what was then an emerging insurgency. For starters, the occupation of Iraq post-9/11 created a broad front to which militant jihadists began to flock. The mishandling of the Iraqi army sent thousands of highly-trained, angry men into the streets with no jobs. And photos of Iraqis being tortured by American personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison provided telegenic images that helped these groups recruit from an increasingly indignant public. Danner’s analysis of the insurgency forecasted how it evolved into what we know today as the Islamic State, over a decade before it happened. VICE News sat down with Danner to discuss how the United States invasion of Iraq and the ensuing war provided what he described as a warm petri dish in which insurgent elements would grow.
