You Can Successfully Crowdfund Science Projects

021615 science projects

The most successful crowdfunding campaigns are often those based in the arts. People are likely to fund projects they understand and feel they could benefit from, usually through tangible products and rewards. So crowdfunding scientific advancements can seem like a more difficult undertaking.

Researchers Jarrett Byrnes and Jai Ranganathan at the University of California-Santa Barbara have been studying crowdfunding for science as part of their project, the #SciFund Challenge. For the challenge, 200 researchers put together and ran 159 different crowdfunding projects.

How Are The ‘Valuation Without Revenue Unicorns’ Faring?

030215 snapchat hq

As part of my research on the subject Billion Dollar Unicorns, I have been tracking Unicorns of various colors and spots, so to speak.

Among those, my least favorite ones are the ones that command gigantic valuations without the revenue to back them up. Let’s look at how two of those are faring.

As I’ve mentioned before, valuation without revenues has returned with a vengeance. The climax of these valuations was Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp. Another Social Messaging firm Snapchat is going through similar valuation cycles.

Civilians Return to Debaltseve: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 96)

After a month of heavy fighting, the pro-Russia separatists of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) finally took the strategically important rail hub town of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine. In early January, the DNR had launched a winter offensive on Ukrainian positions, seizing the Donetsk airport and attacking Ukrainian checkpoints across the line of control separating the two sides. Once the airport had fallen, the DNR focused its attention on Debaltseve, surrounding the town on three sides and pounding it with artillery for four straight weeks. The attack killed dozens and forced thousands of residents to flee. VICE News traveled to Debaltseve a few days after it fell to the DNR to speak to some of the civilians who were slowly returning to their town, which now lies in ruins. The bioMASON Startup Grows Bricks from Bacteria

brick

Bricks are an essential part of most building projects. Though they come in many different forms, most are made of clay and created with a firing process. And that process isn’t exactly environmentally friendly. But Ginger Dosier, a former architect who founded the company bioMASON, think there’s a better way. She told CNN:

“There are over a trillion bricks made this way globally every year. That’s lot of energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions.”

Dosier’s company started out as a simple science experiment.

The Kremlin’s Secret War: Russia’s Ghost Army in Ukraine (Trailer)

The bitter conflict in Ukraine has cost thousands of lives, but the Russian government has continuously denied sending its soldiers to the frontlines, despite accusations to the contrary from NATO and Western officials. Since August 2014, a small but steady stream of coffins began arriving in villages across Russia, containing the maimed bodies of soldiers killed in “unknown circumstances.” Some would be buried hastily at night or in secret funerals, their graves zealously guarded from prying outsiders. Journalists investigating the deaths have reported being threatened with intimidation and attacks. In cases that the Kremlin could not so easily ignore, the dead or injured have been hailed as “volunteers” who entered Ukraine on leave from the army — heroes who fought unofficially for the freedom of their Russian-speaking brethren. In a new three-part series, VICE News travels to Russia to investigate the mysterious deaths of dozens — possibly hundreds — of active-duty Russian servicemen who are believed to have been killed in Ukraine. Accounts gathered from soldiers’ families, human rights workers, and government officials cast doubt on the Kremlin narrative, revealing the unacknowledged sacrifices borne by Russia’s ghost army. Fallout in Gaza: Six Months On (Full Length)

During the devastating 50-day war in Israel and Gaza this past summer, around 18,000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or severely damaged, leaving around 120,000 residents homeless. Now, with trouble in neighboring Sinai and infighting between Palestinian factions, reconstruction efforts in the beleaguered Gaza Strip are moving slowly. With the UN warning of a growing humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza, many fear that another armed conflict is imminent. Six months after the end of fighting, VICE News returns to the region to investigate the progress on reconstruction. Albino Murders in Tanzania (Excerpt from ‘VICE News Meets Josephat Torner’)

A string of murders that began in 2000 has now left more than 72 albinos in Tanzania dead. These killings are believed to be motivated by the lucrative trade in albino body parts, which some Africans believe possess magical powers. Tanzania has now been listed by the United Nations as the African nation where albinos are targeted for murder the most. According to long-standing traditions in the country, albinos are believed to be ghosts who are cursed, but whose body parts can ward off bad luck, and bring the owner wealth and success. In response to these killings, in January 2015 Tanzania banned witch doctors. In East Africa, one child in 3,000 is born albino, compared to one in 20,000 in the United States. In Tanzania, albino advocacy groups estimate the number of albinos to be somewhere above 100,000 in a population of nearly 50 million people. VICE News traveled to Tanzania to meet with Josephat Torner, an albino activist who has dedicated his life to raising awareness and acceptance towards albinos in his country, while debunking the widespread myths and superstitions surrounding the congenital disorder. In this excerpt, Josephat talks about the witchdoctor-motivated albino killings and discusses instances where family members have facilitated these murders.
