Samsung Re-imagines Famous Self-Portraits as Selfies

Self-Portrait 3SIZED

A self-portrait painting from centuries ago is the predecessor of the selfie. Samsung cleverly capitalized on this fact in recent ads for its NX mini camera. In the ads, Vincent van Gogh, Albrecht Dürer and Frida Kahlo use the camera to take pictures of themselves, which turn out to be their famous self-portraits, as you can see in the camera display screen. To enhance the camera advertisements, Samsung adds a witty slogan about the camera, how it is “for self-portraits, not selfies.”

BovControl is a Cow-Tracking App for Farmers

Brazil has 200 million cattle. That means there are actually more cows than humans. And because of that, the country is the world’s largest exporter of beef.

Clearly, beef is a huge industry in Brazil. But with so many cows, how are ranchers and food producers supposed to keep track of them? Well, there’s now an app called BovControl that aims to help farmers, food companies and even consumers track and gather information about cattle.

The app is currently available on Android platforms, and an iOS version is due out in early 2015.

122914 ecommerce

There was a time when group buying virtually snatched the popularity away from all other e-commerce models. But that day is long gone. Today, group buying is anything but sought after.

The falling popularity of group buying as an e-commerce model both saddens and surprises me and I never stop wondering what actually went wrong.

In this article, I attempt to piece together all the findings that my research in this area has led to. I do hope once the dots are all connected, the reason behind group buying and its fall from popularity won’t remain a mystery to us.

A City Divided: Jerusalem’s Most Contested Neighborhood (Trailer)

Throughout the past several months, Jerusalem has been a scene of clashes and violent attacks. Silwan, a Palestinian neighborhood just steps away from Jerusalem’s Old City, has been at the heart of the unrest, and is becoming one of the most contentious neighborhoods in the most contested city in the world. As settlement expansion into East Jerusalem continues, Israeli authorities have ramped up their practice of demolishing homes built without proper permits — permits which are near impossible for Palestinians to acquire. In addition to the demolitions due to lack of permits, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in early November the reinstatement of the policy of demolishing terrorists’ homes, which Palestinians claim is a form of collective punishment. VICE News traveled to Silwan and met with Palestinians and Israelis living in this contested neighborhood at a time when Jerusalem is more divided than ever.
