Samsung Galaxy Note Goes Over the Edge — With Curved Screen

Samsung is about to throw the smartphone world a curve ball — with a curved screen. The Galaxy Note Edge will be available exclusively through AT&T starting on Nov. 14. To get this cutting-edge phablet from Samsung without a contract, it will set you back $945.99.

The device is a lot like the recently premiered Galaxy Note 4, the company’s latest high-end phablet on the market. Samsung introduced both these devices at an event in September.

There is one glaring difference between the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, however. The 5.6-inch Quad HD AMOLED display on the Note Edge actually wraps around one of the curved edges of the device.

It’s on this curved edge (the one on the right side of the device) that you’ll be able to receive text, email, and call notifications and other updates.

The face of the phablet is thus unencumbered by those notifications. This devotes the entire front face of the phablet to whatever work you’re doing at the time.

In an official announcement from the carrier, AT&T’s Senior Vice President of mobile devices Jeff Bradley says in a explains:

“The Galaxy Note Edge pushes innovation with a second curved screen on the edge which is highly functional, making it a great smartphone for consumers and the perfect addition to AT&T’s leading device portfolio. The customizable edge display provides you easy access to your news, notifications and favorite apps, with the ability to continue your activities on your main screen.”

The large screen on the Galaxy Note Edge also allows you to take advantage of Samsung’s Multi Window feature. This lets you work on two apps simultaneously on the same phablet screen.

Samsung also seems to be sparing little expense on the cameras for the Note Edge. There is a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 3.7-megapixel wide angle front-facing camera, too.

The device uses a 2.7 GHz Quad-Core processor to run Android 4.4 KitKat.

As noted, the Galaxy Note Edge is likely not the phablet for the budget-conscious. The retail price is nearly $1,000. AT&T is offering the device for $399.99 with a two-year commitment. There are other pricing plans available to purchase the device over time with AT&T.

But the functionality, curved screen and added screen space as a result may be another big step in smartphone evolution.
