A Syrian Fighter in an Israeli Hospital (Excerpt from ‘The War Next Door’)

In August, al Nusra Front jihadists took control of Syria’s side of the border crossing with Israel and kidnapped over 40 United Nations peacekeepers — who have since been released. But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border. Just a few weeks ago, the Israeli military shot down a Syrian plane flying over the Golan Heights — the first time it has done so since the 1980s. In this excerpt, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visits the Ziv Medical Center in Safed, Israel, which is unique for its proximity to the international borders with Lebanon and Syria, and for treating victims of hostilities and soldiers injured on both sides of the border. The Clicker Plus Ring Will Train Your Dog

clicker plus 2

Entrepreneur and professional dog trainer Josh Pitts has taken his love for dog training and channeled it into Clicker Plus. Pitts is a firm believer in clicker training but noticed that many dog owners were inclined to leave their clicker at home when taking their pets out. The reason is clickers can be cumbersome when you are also juggling a leash, treats, and other pet accessories. To answer this problem Pitts developed a simple and unobtrusive clicker in the form of a ring worn on your finger.

This may not mean much to you if you have never heard of clicker training.

Pamela Prentice of SAS on the Topic of Customers Giving Up Personal Info

pamela

There’s more information about people today available then ever before, with most of it coming directly from them. But the more personal and important the information is, the more difficult it is to get it from them. Getting people to like you on Facebook or Twitter is more driven by emotion and impulse. Getting them to divulge personal information addresses their practical side.

The Result Speaks for Itself

it speaks for itself

When I was a kid, we still had handwriting as part of the school curriculum. Although it wasn’t my favorite class, I think I did come away with some good, fine motor skills and decent penmanship – even if it ended up being printed and in all caps.

Still, there’s something about that lovely line of great cursive. And one day, I had the idea of using it in a line graph and this cartoon came out.

I did have to go back to see how to make that darned capital G and it took a good dozen attempts before I got things looking the way I wanted, but it was worth it.
